I live in Christchurch, New Zealand.

My photographic images reflect a lifetime interest in design. Guided by a ‘less is more’ philosophy (Mies van der Rhoe), I have been attracted to making abstract, high contrast black and white images.

To challenge myself now that I am in my 80’s, I decided to broaden my approach using my camera in a different way. I move the camera while the shutter is open to blur images and I make multiple exposures – multiple photos layered one on top of another in the camera and then finished in Photoshop.

Just as a painter puts various layers of paint on the canvas, John puts layers of images on the camera’s sensor – his camera is his 'paint brush'.

Although these images are more detailed and more random due the way the camera’s digital sensor reacts to different layers, there is still a significant geometric pattern underlying the images.

My view is that "art is revelation instead of information, expression  instead of description, creation instead of imitation or repetition."  (Josef Albers)

I try to photograph like an artist.
